Inspired by old Dutch master’s paintings and tapestries there was a sober element to Valentino’s folkloric show. A natural realism that moved on to explore a girlish and almost fairy tale side of the Valentino woman was woven in with signature delicate lace appliqué and beautiful porcelain inspired floral prints. A version of a pilgrim’s shoes and glittering court shoes blended the two themes as did the long sweeping gowns that were a contrast the shorter smocks that took to the runway at the start of the show. Paying homage to the master couturier’s signature red gowns there were floor length, red dresses present in the show albeit with a much more sober feel. A number of wide sleeved, hooded capes added a folk twist to the outerwear that was worn over tunics and displayed the house’s flair for fine detail and appliqué.
